Queen of Sheba: Empress of Legend and Legacy



Explore one of history's most enigmatic and powerful women in our new exhibit at the National Museum of Ethiopia. "Queen of Sheba: Empress of Legend and Legacy" delves into the rich tapestry of legends and archaeological discoveries throughout the Aksum region that surround the legendary Queen of Sheba. Explore her mysterious origins, her journey to meet King Solomon, and the profound cultural and historical impact she has had on Ethiopia and beyond. This exhibit features an array of ancient artifacts, intricate art pieces, and immersive multimedia displays that bring to life the grandeur of her reign and enduring influence on Ethiopian heritage.



Biodiversity Of The Past



Journey back in time and uncover the rich and diverse natural history of Ethiopia. This exhibit showcases the incredible array of wildlife that once roamed the Ethiopian landscapes. Marvel at the majestic giants such as the Ethiopian elephants and the esteemed national treasure: the Ibex. Discover the story of the now-extinct giant buffalo, the awe-inspiring saber-toothed cat, and the massive Nile crocodile that once dominated the rivers. The exhibit also highlights ancient birds like the magnificent bearded vulture and the rare Ethiopian wolf. Through fossil displays, life-sized reconstructions, and interactive exhibits, Biodiversity Of The Past brings to life the ecosystems that flourished in Ethiopia from long ago up to modern day.



Past Exhibits





Churches of Lalibela



Built in the 12th century by King Lalibela of the Zagwe Dynasty, these 11 monolithic churches were carved entirely from rock and remain an enduring testament to medieval Ethiopian craftsmanship and devotion. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the churches are renowned for their unique architecture and intricate carvings. The exhibit features detailed models, high-resolution photographs, and virtual reality tours of iconic structures such as Biete Medhane Alem, the largest rock-hewn church in the world, and Biete Giyorgis, famed for its cruciform shape. Learn about the fascinating construction techniques, religious significance, and the vibrant festivals that continue to attract pilgrims from around the globe.



The Jews of Ethiopia



Discover the unique history of the Beta Israel community at our "Jews of Ethiopia" exhibit. Learn about their origins, dating back to the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, and their connection to the Solomonic dynasty. Explore their migration stories, including the dramatic airlifts of Operation Moses (1984) and Operation Solomon (1991), which brought thousands of Beta Israel to Israel. The exhibit features artifacts such as traditional religious texts, colorful ceremonial garments, and ancient ritual objects. Personal stories, photographs, and interactive displays highlight their resilience, struggles, and contributions to Ethiopian society. Join us in celebrating the remarkable legacy of the Beta Israel.



People of Oromia



As Ethiopia's largest ethnic group, the Oromo have a vibrant culture and history spanning centuries. Our exhibit showcases contemporary artwork and traditional artifacts, including intricately woven garments, ceremonial jewelry, and musical instruments. Explore the Gadaa system, a sophisticated and ancient form of democratic governance unique to the Oromo, along with their unique methods of agriculture & craftsmanship through interactive displays and tactile learning. Join us in celebrating the resilience, diversity, and enduring spirit of the Oromo people.
